New Artist Alert! Abstract Paintings by Harry Moody at Markowicz Fine Art!

A Harry Moody painting can seem to hold several moments at once. One band of color crosses another; a scraped passage exposes an earlier layer; dense pigment gives way to an almost transparent field. The surface is not simply filled with marks. It records their encounters, including the places where a gesture has been interrupted, revised or allowed to remain.

Born in Wiesbaden, Germany, in 1952, Moody studied at the Städelschule in Frankfurt from 1972 to 1978. Now based in Los Angeles, Moody approaches abstraction as an ongoing investigation rather than a fixed visual formula. His paintings develop through a balance of deliberate decisions and unexpected effects, with each change in the surface creating conditions for the next.

Oil paint is central to this process. Working into still-wet layers, he moves pigment with brushes, palette knives, trowels and squeegees, varying the direction and pressure of each tool. What appears spontaneous is shaped by repeated observation. Photographs taken during walks in nature also provide material for reflection, though the resulting paintings do not depend on a recognizable landscape. Their subjects are the relationships between color, texture and space.

Moody’s exhibition history includes the group exhibition “Colors of Abstraction” at 193 Gallery in Paris and participation in the London Art Biennale in 2021. Upstart Modern presented “A Painter’s Domain” in 2023, the year his book “Uncharted Visions” was published. These contexts offer different ways into the work, but its physical surface remains the starting point: a painting whose balance changes as the viewer moves between the whole composition and its smallest traces.
